Applications are invited for a 3.5-year EPSRC CASE studentship with GlaxoSmithKline plc working with Professor Matthew Gaunt on a project that will investigate the development of new catalysis reactions using an automated high throughout synthesis platform. Particular emphasis will be placed on strategically important bond-forming processes, late-stage functionalization and programmable multi-step synthesis, with the overarching aim of generating a holistic new approach to chemical synthesis.

Further information can be obtained from Professor Gaunt (email:

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second-class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in chemistry, with a specific interest in organic synthesis and its associated characterisation techniques. The studentship will provide a maintenance grant and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and is available to UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements of the Research Councils. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award. Owing to funding restrictions imposed by the sponsor, non-EU citizens cannot be considered.

Applications should include a CV, detailed academic transcripts and the contact details for two academic referees, and should be emailed to Professor Gaunt (email:
