Professor of Political Theory

Applications are invited for the post of Full Professor in the field of Political Theory within the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Duisburg, Germany.

The salary is determined by the professorial pay scale W2 of the Bundesland of NRW. The successful candidate will usually be appointed as a civil servant (Beamter/Beamte).
The ideal candidate has an excellent international profile in the field of Political Theory, in terms of both research and teaching. He or she must be able to teach in both German and English from the start of his or her tenure.

The department is seeking a candidate whose research agenda is in line with at least one of the following topics: (a) Democratic Theory and Theory of Political Power, (b) theories of political normativity, (c) theories of political governance in national, international, or transnational contexts, (d) Theory of Individual and Collective Action in Politics, or (e)
Theory of Politics and the Political.

The ideal candidate must have publications in highly-ranked, peer-reviewed publication outlets and some experience with successful competitive applications for, and completion of, third-party funded research projects. The funding experience should preferably be with the German Research Foundation or equivalent national funding bodies.

The post-holder must be willing to apply for and complete third-party funded projects in collaboration with other members of the department, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the interdisciplinary main research, and other research institutes of the university.

The University of Duisburg-Essen places particular emphasis on high-quality teaching.
Candidates must present their teaching philosophy, with reference to the particular profile of the university. The ideal candidate will demonstrate his or her commitment to high-quality teaching designed to emphasize the importance of political theory as a fundamental element of political science, politics as part of civic education, and the training of teachers-to-be.

A necessary prerequisite is extensive experience with teaching Political Theory. Desirable prerequisites are experience with the training of teachers-to-be and formal qualification in teaching pedagogy.

The formal requirements must be satisfied in accordance with § 36 of the law of higher education NRW.
